NTSB Makes Recommendation on Gusset Plates in Steel Truss Bridges
The National Transportation Safety Board made a recommendation to the Federal Highway Administration on gusset plates in steel truss bridges as the result of an interim finding from its investigation of the I-35W bridge collapse in Minneapolis. Click here for the formal letter recommendation to the Administrator. Click here for the Technical Advisory in response to NTSB's recommendation.
The Technical Advisory looks ahead and retrospectively in a responsible and measured manner to assure the safety of the public. As you work with the Alabama Department of Transportation on this Technical Advisory, please keep in mind the specific findings of the NTSB that focus on significant changes in stresses on truss bridges through permanent modifications or temporary loadings, which include permit loads.
New Procedure Approved for Annual Maintenance Programs
Counties may now ask the Alabama Department of Transportation to remove certain road and bridge projects from the annual inspection conducted by ALDOT. The application procedure, which has been approved by the Department as well as ACCA and ACEA, is designed to remove the inspection requirement from those projects that otherwise require inspection, but have exceeded their useful life, are under the responsibility of a municipality, or "otherwise are considered candidated for removal." The policy outlines the specific circumstances justifying the removal of the projects.
If you would like to know more about this new ALDOT procedure, click here for the latest copy of ACEA Today . This First Quarter 2008 issue contains information about the Road and Bridge Tour, ACEA's Flood Plain Committee, and ACCA's District Meeting Schedule. Download your copy today!
